Alex Rubin
I am a marine biologist focusing on fisheries science, particularly life history and population ecology. My prior research has focused on using cutting-edge biochemical techniques such as stable isotope analysis and Fourier-transform near infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIRS). I plan to use interdisciplinary methods including these biochemical research tools to study changes in the ecology of Northwest Atlantic blue shark population ecology over the last 60 years. My previous research projects include developing FT-NIRS as a tool to rapidly estimate age in teleosts, sharks, and squid, and developing a novel method to preprocess shark blood plasma for stable isotope ecology studies. At URI-GSO I will be working aboard the R/V Cap’n Bert as the URI Trawl Survey Assistant. Outside of the lab, I like to dive and snorkel around Rhode Island, surf, fish, and play guitar and cello.
