I am interested in using both social science (ethnography) and natural science (ecogeochemistry) to understand how humans interact with coastal environments to form coupled socio-ecological systems. For my dissertation, I am working with One People One Reef to characterize the social and trophic dynamics of Ulithi Atoll's coral reefs in an effort to inform reef management. I employ ethnographic approaches to understand the views and practices of modern vs. traditional fishing methods (spearfishing vs. hook and line) and stable isotope geochemistry to track the flow of energy through reef food webs. Together, these findings may inform Ulithian communities on how their reefs have changed and may continue changing in the future. In my spare time, I like to read, backpack, and play board games with friends.
